MW2-2023 ALEUTIAN ISLANDS & ISLANDS OF THE BARENTS
The most remote islands you never hear of. Sailing a wild, ragged and diverse coast line with mighty ridges, deep bays. Dune islands and sandy beaches too. The ragged Alaskan peaks may show on the far horizon. Fishermen, with big boats or small skiffs they bring crabs and all kind of fish to shore. Deadliest catch documentaries come from here.
The weather may be turbulent. There is no such thing as bad weather, mysterious even under a dense fog. Whenever we get a chance we may stroll on land
DATES:
Part one: Aleutian Islands - June - July - 20 days; Dutch Harbor to Dutch Harbor
Part two: Islands Of The Barents - July 20 days; Dutch Harbor to Nome
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Adventure comes rarely without resistance: not for softies – chilly weather now and then – ice lookout - radar guard – fog – ice cold seaspray – all hands on deck.
Gain new experiences: sailing experience - responsibility, your contribution is not without commitment, dedication and awareness - new friendships – discover unsuspected qualities in yourself.
Opportunities for M/V: full engagement for both genders, grab this opportunity.
Your captain: has been trained on 7000 m mountain peaks, in dry deserts, and more than 30,000 miles in wind and ice on Northern seas. Ready to sharing knowledge and a good cook. Only human, owner of a list of shortcomings, will never let go of your safety and well being. Speaks many languages.
ITINERARY MW2
Day 1 and 2 From 14:00h arrival on the boat, you will get a round on the boat and check in. We do a series of instructions on safety, find out about those lines, how to handle the sails, mooring and anchoring and life on board. You make friends with the boat as it is.
We do last jobs and last shoppings.
Day 3/19 Won't fit in any itinerary. We sail away and pickup route along the bear coast. The weather of the Barents is very dynamic.
Winds may grow to williwaw force with little warning. Strong weather may force tidal currents run faster or make them flow the other way. Heavy seas may follow. With daily weather forecast in hands we make our discovery through the archipelago.
Safety for all is on top of the list. On some islands we find many bays with sheltered coves to drop anchor and enjoy nature, do some fishing, catch crabs. Always respect the bears. Other coasts won't offer any protection at all, we must anticipate on the weather as far ahead as we can and we may drop anchor on unexpected places.
Day 20 Last day we use for a good cleaning of the boat and get packed before 12:00h.
The program is indicative and may change according to weather and conditions. Together we will make the most out of it.

HOW ABOUT THE COLD
Arctic springtime comes with a lot of bright sunshine, it really feels like springtime. The freezing is over, mostly you wear an extra sweater or a windbreaker instead of just a shirt. Cloud cover and fog will make for chilly days. So yes, it will be coldish snowing or raining now and then, never freezing.
Bad weather comes with dramatic landscapes so we dress well and go !
MUST I BE A SAILOR
Need to be a seasoned sailor? All you need is a desire to learning, a healthy and sportive physical condition and a vivid mind as well.
WHAT IS HEALTHY AND SPORTIVE PHYSICAL CONDITION
Sailing is a stop and go sport. You can move around in control over deck and through the tilting boat, stairs up, stairs down. Not shy to pull the lines, lift a heavy sail, lift an anchor. You Can pull a 30kg loaded line for a few minutes.
Are you not sure, go to the fitness and do a bit of light power training in advance.
