DISKO ESTUARY ARCHIPEL
DISKO ICEBERG PROCESSION
ILULISSAT ICE BARRIER
MW2 DISKO BAY ESTUARY SAILING – ROUGH, REAL & REMOTE GREENLAND
The Disko Bay is the largest fjord of Greenland with numerous islands and smaller fjords. The glaciers flowing from the Greenland ice cap break off in giant icebergs beyond your imagination. Aasiaat counts 3500 souls, not a village, not a town, has an airstrip and a covered market for fish and hunting game. The Inuit are easy going people who like to have a chat with you.
Once leaving Aasiaat, the silence is overwhelming, only broken by the sounds of sea and sparkling sounds of melting ice. Big icebergs, melting and calving into epic art pieces, follow mysterious procession paths towards the Baffin Basin.
We find anchoring on centuries old spots in archipelagos’ as Hunde Ejland, Kronprinsen Ejland and the contrasting Groenne Ejland. The biggest Island, icecap covered Disko Island, offers anchoring in Fortune Bay, beaches, strolling through settlements or in the countryside and most often humpbacks around.
CORONA C-19 QUARANTINING IN WILDERNESS
On destination arrival in Greenland we will obey quarantine rules by sailing out into the wilderness for 5 days and apply for retesting in next following port.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Adventure comes rarely without resistance: not for softies – chilly weather now and then – ice lookout - radar guard – fog – ice cold seaspray – all hands on deck.
Gain new experiences: sailing experience - responsibility, your contribution is not without commitment, ' ya can't wreck the ship ' - dedication and mindfullness - new friendships – discover unsuspected qualities to yourself.
Opportunities for M/V: full engagement for both genders, grab this opportunity.
Your captain: has been trained on 7000 m mountain peaks, in dry deserts, and more than 30,000 miles in wind and ice on Northern seas. Ready to sharing knowledge and a good cook. Only human, owner of a list of shortcomings, will never let go of your safety and well being. Speaks many languages.
THINGS TO DO IN AASIAAT
-very old settlement
-restaurants and hangouts have a reputation beyond Greenland
-traditional sculpture art
-local hunt market, fresh fish, seal, whale catches, birds. Reindeer or musk ox
-Active: excursion kayak-trekking hinterland – husky training – fishing boat tours – ferries to distant places.
Day 1 14:00h Arrival on the boat, you will get a safety round on the boat and check in.
Day 2 We do last shoppings and sail away to Hund Island / Kitsissuarsuit. You become friends with the boat and we find anchoring on a sheltered spot, beach & stroll.
Day 3/7 The wind will tell us which direction we sail, favorites are Fortune Bay, Skansen and Groenne Ejland. We will definitely meet the parade of Icebergs sometimes as mountains high. We look out for whales to spot and maybe we see them feeding together. There are many sheltered anchoring bays where we can go for a hike.
Day 9 We pull up the sails for the final tracking to our last anchor spot in Hollaenderhavn, a last chance to spot humpbacks and freeze them on camera. If we are lucky we catch a gorgeous meal.
Day 10 After breakfast we pickup anchor and sail back to dock, we cleanup the boat before mooring and check out before 12:00. Thank you for sharing an adventure we never will forget.
The program is indicative and may change according to weather and conditions. Together we will make the most out of it.

HOW ABOUT THE COLD
Greenland springtime comes with a lot of bright sunshine, it really feels like springtime. The freezing is over, mostly you wear a sweater or windbreaker instead of a shirt. Cloud cover and fog will make for chilly days. So yes, it will be cold now and then.
Bad weather comes with dramatic landscapes so we dress well and go !
MUST I BE A SAILOR
Need to be a seasoned sailor? All you need is a desire to learning, a healthy and sportive physical condition and a vivid mind as well.
WHAT IS HEALTHY AND SPORTIVE PHYSICAL CONDITION
Sailing is a stop and go sport. You can move around in control over deck and through the tilting boat, stairs up, stairs down. Not shy to pull the lines, lift a heavy sail, lift an anchor. You Can pull a 30kg loaded line for a few minutes.
Are you not sure, go to the fitness and do a bit of light power training in advance.
